Man caught enjoying a cold beer while picking child up from school

RED LEVEL, AL (WSFA) - A Red Level man found himself in jail after he tried to pick his child up from school on Monday. The catch? A School Resource Officer noticed the man smelled like alcohol and the man admitted to drinking a beer on the way over.

According to the Covington County Sheriff's Office, around 1:15 p.m. Monday, School Resource Officer Michael Vigor observed a man in the Red Level School office trying to check out a student. The man smelled strongly of alcohol.

The officer asked the man, later identified as 60-year-old Calvin Lamar Adams, if he had been drinking. Adams replied, "Yes sir, I just drank a beer."

Deputy Vigor then asked Adams if he drove to the school that day. Adams replied, "Yes sir."

Authorities say the SRO conducted a field sobriety test on Adams - he blew a .04 on the breathalyzer. Deputy Vigor also found an opened, cold beer inside Adams' vehicle which was parked in front of the school.

Man’s “minor” fib lands him in cold water

Man’s “minor” fib lands him in cold water

OPP, AL (WSFA) - A Georgiana man is in custody in Covington County after a bizarre turn of events that started with an underage drinking arrest and ended with a completely different identity.

Opp Police officers arrested 19-year-old Lajon Pate of Georgiana on Sunday, June 24 for an underage drinking charge and placed him in the Opp City Jail. Pate was unable to post bail for this arrest and was held over at the jail. Two days later Pate requested to see a doctor relating to a medical issue. Authorities transported him to the Opp Mizell Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.

Pate was seen by a doctor and was given prescriptions for an undisclosed medical issue. The officer who had accompanied Pate to the ER stepped out of the room briefly to speak with the doctor about the prescribed medication - that's when Pate made his next move.

Pate fled the hospital and was later apprehended, still wearing handcuffs, after he was found lying in a creek.
