'Signifigant' marijuana grow operation halted in Andalusia

ANDALUSIA, AL (WSFA) - Andalusia Police say they have put a stop to what they call a 'significant' drug operation.

Authorities say 29-year-old Micah Rider has been arrested and charged with first degree possession of marijuana.

Andalusia Police say Rider operated an elaborate marijuana grow operation. He was found to have 45 plants in a residence near Straughn School.

Rider is currently being held on $13,000 bond. Authorities say he does have a criminal record, however none of the charges are drug-related.

 The Auburn University at Montgomery men’s basketball team and head coach Larry Chapman are pleased to announce the addition of 10 newcomers to the program for the 2012-13 season.

Joining the Warhawks for the upcoming season are Chris Bell (Buckhorn, Ala./Lurleen B. Wallace CC), Reshad Bickham (Jackson, Miss./Alabama Southern CC), Quay Davis (Glenville, Ga./Central Georgia Technical College), Dominique Ellis (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Marion Military Institute), Tristen Harrell (Dalton, Ga./Dalton HS), Paul Harris (Montgomery, Ala./Brew Tech HS), LaRel Jackson (Redbay, Fla./Jefferson Davis CC), Spencer Jones (Jasper, Ga./Pickens County HS), Brett Person (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Alabama Southern CC) and Jaylin Prewitt (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Brookwood HS). In all, the signees consist of five juniors, a sophomore and four freshmen.

“We really needed to recruit mature players, and I feel like we did a good job of doing that through the junior college route,” Chapman said.

Convicted sex offender given prison sentence for failing to register

Montgomery, Alabama – Billy Wayne Howard, a resident of Covington County, Alabama, was sentenced to fifteen months in federal prison for a federal felony conviction for failing to register as a sex offender, United States Attorney George L. Beck, Jr., announced today. 

A federal grand jury indicted Howard in December, 2011, for one count of failing to register and update a registration as required by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act after he traveled in interstate commerce in violation of federal law.  Howard was convicted of two counts of lewd or lascivious assault upon a child in Florida in 1996.  Due to these convictions, Howard was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 103 months with the Florida Department of Corrections.

Sixty-three nursing home residents are expected to gather at The Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover today, July 23, at 2:00 p.m. for the annual Ms. Alabama Nursing Home Pageant.  The winner will serve as a spokesperson for nursing home residents and the Alabama Nursing Home Association.

“These 63 ladies are to be commended because they are wonderful ambassadors for their individual nursing home and Alabama’s long-term care profession,” Alabama Nursing Home Association President Eddie Jackson said.  “Each one captures the spirit of the Ms. Alabama Nursing Home Pageant which is a celebration of life and of our nursing home residents’ contributions to the lives of others.”

Miss Alabama Anna Laura Bryan will co-host the event, and Ms.

River Falls Police arrest three for "rash of burglaries"

On Monday July 9th, River Falls Police Chief Greg Jackson and Covington County Sheriffs Deputy Michael Vigor responded to a Burglary call on Dewberry st in the City limits of River Falls.

After leaving the scene Chief Jackson tried to make contact with two subjects walking in the area. As he did, both subjects ran on foot. Jackson called for assistance and numerous agency's responded to assist to include the Covington County Sheriffs Office, Alabama Beverage Control, Red Level Police Chief Howard West, and Andalusia Police Officers.

Red Level Police Chief Howard West received information where the subjects could be held up. Officers responded and after receiving permission from the homeowner entered the residence they arrested Terrance Henderson, 19 of River Falls, and two 17-year-old juveniles.
