Double-shooting investigation under way near Red Level

RED LEVEL, AL (WSFA)- Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks is confirming that two people have been shot, one fatally, at a residence on Palmer Lane near Red Level. The shootings occurred at approximately 1pm Thursday.

Meeks said deputies were dispatched to the address which is located off of Co. Rd 21 south of Red Level, after a man contacted authorities to say he'd been shot.

When the deputies arrived on scene, they found two individuals lying just inside the front door. Both were suffering from gunshot wounds.

Medics determined that a female victim, identified as Catherine M. Symanowsk, 54, of Padgett Road in Andalusia, was dead.

A male victim, Gerald Palmer, 68, of Palmer Lane, Red Level, was suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Sheriff Meeks said the shots appear to be a small caliber handgun.

The man was transported to an Andalusia hospital for treatment.

Investigators are still trying to determine the reason for the shooting. Sheriff Meeks advised that this case is still under investigation.
