Covington County man sentenced to federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender | Crime

Patrick McGlaughlin, of Covington County, Alabama, was sentenced to eighteen months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender, United States Attorney George L. Beck, Jr., announced today.  

A federal grand jury indicted McGlaughlin in April, 2012, for one count of failing to register and update a registration as required by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act after he traveled in interstate commerce in violation of federal law.  According to court documents, McGlaughlin was convicted of one count of child molesting in 1995 and one count of child molesting in 2000 in Indiana. 

Due to these convictions, McGlaughlin is required to register as a sex offender for life.  During McGlaughlin’s guilty plea hearing, he admitted that he last registered as a sex offender in Indiana in March 2011.  McGlaughlin also admitted that in October 2011, he traveled from Indiana and relocated to Alabama.  McGlaughlin further admitted that, after relocating to Alabama, he knowingly failed to register as a sex offender in Alabama.

United States District Mark E. Fuller sentenced McGlaughlin to eighteen (18) months in federal prison to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release.  McGlaughlin remains in the custody of the United States Marshals Service pending placement by the Bureau of Prisons.
