Andalusia man sentenced to prison for reckless driving deaths | Crime
ANDALUSIA, AL (WSFA) - An Andalusia man has been sentenced to serve two 20-year terms in prison following the deaths of two women in a March 2007 car crash.
According to Attorney General Luther Strange , 49-year-old David Worth Wiltshire must serve two 20-year terms in prison, pay a fine of $5,000 and pay an additional $1,000 to the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation fund after a jury found him guilty of reckless driving that took the lives of two women.
Witnesses testified in the 2011 trial that Wiltshire was driving recklessly and speeding on U.S. Highway 84 in River Falls on March 1, 2007. His vehicle crossed the center line into the opposing lane and struck a vehicle driven by Deanna K. Ingram Van Gieson of Theodore. Both Van Gieson, and a passenger in the car, Christie Wright Still of Evergreen, were both pronounced dead on the scene.
Evidence was also presented at the trial that Wiltshire was driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving with a revoked license, driving recklessly, speeding, and on the wrong side of the road. One witness testified that he had swerved to keep his car from being hit by Wiltshire before crashing into Van Gieson’s vehicle.
“It is appropriate that this defendant will serve many years in prison for the tragedy that resulted from his reckless criminal actions,” said Attorney General Strange. “I am pleased that this judge and jury have held him responsible for the decisions and actions he took that tragically cut short the lives of two women.”
