COVINGTON COUNTY, AL. (WSFA) - According to the Covington County Sheriff's Office, a late night fire left two people dead just south of Andalusia.
At approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night, Deputies were called to a structure fire on Mac and Marie Lane on US 29 just south of Andalusia. Upon arrival they found a single-wide trailer fully engulfed in flames, with reports of two people trapped inside.
Neighbors said people who live nearby tried to help.
"They tried to kick in the door and save them, but they couldn't," said Nina Petty, a neighbor. "The flames and the fire was too much on them."
The Carolina Volunteer Fire Department and the Andalusia Fire Department battled the blaze. After the fire was extinguished, two bodies were discovered in the trailer. Authorities confirm Gary D. Steele, 44, and his father Freddie L. Steele Jr, 67, were killed in the blaze. Petty said she knew the men well.
The Covington County Sheriff's office and the Alabama Fire Marshall's Office are investigation the circumstances surrounding the fire.
"The old man liked like to watch T.V., he liked those old John Wayne movies, old Westerns," Petty said. "He was a good old fella, you loved him to death. You loved both of them."
